Around 3.6 billion toothbrushes are sold around the globe per year, a lot them end up in landfill, and it’s hard to believe they are not easily biodegradable. But there is an alternative – Bamboo Brushes.
In an effort to bring more awareness on this and also support women entrepreneurs like Kinga and Ann, today we are covering Kinga and Ann’s story of starting up ekaecofriendly. EKA is an eco-friendly brand selling 100% panda friendly, biodegradable, bamboo toothbrushes in an effort to save the planet.
EKA is a female founded and lead eco-friendly brand. EKA aim is to provide a sustainable alternative to the worst offending single-use plastic item – the toothbrush.
Kinga and Ann are the founders of EKA Eco-friendly. Both attended the same law school but wanted to do something else as well, their own business. Reducing impact on the environment felt important to Kinga and Ann, therefore it was given to invest into an eco-friendly product and start an eco-friendly company.
How did your eco-friendly journey start, when is the moment you felt I have to make a shift? What are the changes you made?
Kinga: There was a point when I realised that we use a scary amount of plastic daily. We can see that when we take the rubbish out or when we observe our shopping bags, everything comes in a plastic package. I started small, I stopped buying bottled water. I looked for other products as well, such as refillable shower gels, shampoo bar. I like that they do not contain any harsh chemicals, they are 95% natural ingredients.
Ann: I have eczema and so I have to be really careful with the laundry detergent that I use. After several trial and errors of itchy skin means I now know what to look for in laundry care product range developed for people with sensitive skin. So products with synthetic fragrance is a definite no-no. The range I am currently using from Kinn has only essential oils such a Neroli blossom and smells heavenly.
Give us examples of eco-friendly products you use on a daily basis and
Kinga: EKA toothbrush of course. It is an excellent choice for our daily oral
hygiene. Also, we will launch our new products soon so stay tuned. From other brands, beauty kitchen, I use refillable shower gel, I always reuse shopping bags, I like method products and ecover.
Ann: Our EKA bamboo toothbrush of course, this is used by everyone in our
household. Eco-friendly laundry care products. Reusable bags for groceries, always keep one in your handbag for those days when you pop into the store. Reusable coffee cups and for packed lunches a reusable container and cutlery.
Was it easy? Were you able to sustain it?
Kinga: Changing habits is never easy, but it doesn’t mean it is bad or it is not worth a try. It is sometimes difficult. Unfortunately, eco-friendly products are still not widely available. But we keep trying.
Ann: Making the switch was easy for me once I saw the difference it made in managing my condition. It can be sometimes challenging sourcing eco-friendly products in my local supermarket when I run out. I have to order all products online.
How was the journey setting up EKA?
Ann: Setting up e-commerce is not as easy as it sounds, but we are committed and expected challenges, every single day we learn, come up with solutions. We are working on selling EKA on Amazon, we have shipped our products to them as well.
Kinga: We have been on this from March 2020, we see quite good progress and good amount of followers as well, which is very positive start, it’s a learning curve and we are excited. We have also partnered with influencers, they have tried the product and reviewed, it is helping us quite a lot.
Where can we buy EKA bamboo brush?
At the moment in Shopify. By end of next week, we will be on Amazon -central Europe.
Is it suitable for children?
Kinga: Right now slightly older children. But we are also thinking if we can make it bit colourful and easily handled for younger kids.
What are the areas you concentrate more on?
Ann: Bamboo toothbrushes are available mostly online and in limited stores but still not as widely available as it should be. We want to play a role to encourage people to get rid of their plastic toothbrushes and start using bamboo instead, also, we hope supermarkets will introduce a range of eco-friendly toothbrushes.
Kinga: EKA aims to make a difference in the fight against plastic waste.
Each year, approximately eight million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans. Some researchers predict that this could double by 2025, while others suggest there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050.
How did you inspire your family? What are the challenges you faced?
Kinga: Setting an example is key, especially for our children and for the next generation. We can make that change easy for them.
Ann: No, it was not difficult. As long as I don’t forget to order they use what is in the cupboard☺
Is there anything you would like to add?
Ann: It is so easy to make the switch from a plastic toothbrush to a bamboo
toothbrush which is 100% eco-friendly, biodegradable.
Kinga: It is a very small investment but it can make a huge difference. We must change our bad habits which involves unnecessary plastic usage and we must start changing them now. Take care and get a bamboo toothbrush 😀 buy-it-here
